kranium, cranium

Description:
Cranium with mandible of Young adult Male (?). Decoration consists of reddish-orange pigment adhering to the cranial vault in several locations, including left and right posterior frontal and anterior parietals, left posterior parietal, temporal and occipital. Also, one loop of dried palm frond or leaf is tied around the left zygomatic. Skull is relatively clean, with very little soil, residue or roots, but color is mottled, ranging from light tan-light brown natural bone color seen on the face, palate, most of basicranium, frontal, and a darker greyish-red on the parietals, left temporal and occipital (probably manganese stating and/or staining from once-more heavily applied red pigment). No traces of insect or animal damage. Two small postmortem scrapes to the surface of the frontal, exposing lighter tan-white bone. Mandible in the box does not belong to this individual. No obvious trauma, but a small area of flattening on posterior sagittal is noted, possibly due to resting position of the head as a neonate. No obvious osseous pathology. Only maxilla is present for this individual (mandible in the box does not match). Only rUPM1, both UM1s, rUM2 and lUM3 present. Minimal wear, minimal calc and minimal staining, but moderate periodontal pitting especially posteriorly. Maxilla: What teeth remain are in good condition. Only individual with a Carabelli's cusp on M1. Mandible: Mandible in the box does not belong to this individual.
