kranium, cranium

Description:
Cranium with mandible of Older adult Female. Presence of decoration is not certain. It is possible that the darker reddish brown staining on the left zygo, lateral left frontal, parietal, temporal and mandible due to pigment once being present. Also could be taphonomic. Skull relatively clean with light soil residue in orbits, nasal, maxilla, and darker residue on mandible, left and right parietals and temporals, left zygomatic. Small patch of residual hair just above right mastoid process. Teeth stained and worn in addition to calc. Very minimal roots. Most of skull a clean tan-yellow in color. No obvious trauma, but very severe TMJ osteOlder adultrthritic pitting and wear present; both mandibular condyles are worn flat with partial or total trabecular bone exposed. Pitting and wear is visible in both corresponding mandibular fossa, especially severe on the right (almost entire surface shows exposed trabecular bone). Only M2s and M3s remain in situ in the maxilla, moderately to heavily worn, calculus but no caries. Most alveolus is intact with minimal evidence of periodontal disease (pitting or alveolar retreat). However, both M1 crypts largely destroyed by abcesses. Mandibular alveolus also mostly intact with minor periodontal pitting, but possible abcess developing in lLM1, LM3, rLM3. Maxilla:. Mandible: Many measurements missing due to missing teeth or molar wear
