Description:
Cranium with mandible of Mature adult/Older adult Male. Decoration consists of a dark red pigment wash or staining on anterior frontal, temporals, occipital, maxilla and mandible. Skull is mottled and variable in color, not just due to red staining in several areas (see deco table). Postmortem damage in several areas including zygomatic arches, left posterior maxillary alveolus, right auditory canal and mastoid process, anterior madibular alveolus, left ramus (lost postmortem), right mandibular condyle (partially broken), posterior zygomatic edge (exposed bone shows weathering), occipital condyles. Teeth lightly-moderately stained. Dark grey soil residue present on occipital (with darker staining on top of red staining), in orbits, nasal, palate, basicranum, mandible, and patches of organic staining elsewhere. Numerous roots present endocranially, in basicranial foramena, nasal, sphenoid, orbits. Left spheno-frontal-temporal border region is lightest in color and appears brittle. Large antemortem healed BFT on left frontal/parietal border along mid-coronal, approximately 24.3mm long. Likely penetrated through both inner and outer tables (photo!). No other trauma or osseous pathology obvious. Dental pathology is also minimal, limited to minor calculus on many teeth and possible antemortem chipping on the disto-buccal corner of rUM1. Some measurements missing due to missing bone. Maxilla:. Mandible: Some measurements missing due to missing teeth, alveolar bone, or attrition.
