Coming solar eclipse to be observed by Dominion astronomers on an isolated Pacific Island

Description:
Scenes at Niuafoou Island, situated about half-way between Fiji and Samoa, where a party of New Zealand astronomers will co-operate with a United States expedition in investigations of the solar eclipse next October. Upper left: The S.S. Tofua calling at the island with the monthly mail. Lower left: Natives swimming ashore from the steamer with a mail in a sealed petrol tin. From this practice the popular name of 'Tin-can' mail is derived. Right: A smoking thermal crater on Niuafoou, where earthquake shocks are often felt. Many natives left the island following a recent serious eruption.
