Robert Louis Stevenson, the brilliant writer, was born at Edinburgh, November 13th, 1850. He was called to the Scottish bar, but laid aside law for literature. Among the many of his delightful writings can be mentioned: "Virginibus Puerisque, and other Papers," "Familiar Studies of Men and Books," "Treasure Island," "Kidnapped," The New Arabian Nights," and "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." His "Child's Garden of Verse" is a gem that stands alone. Besides possessing a vivid imagination, his style was exceptional in its purity. He died in Samoa where he had lived for some time.
