Song of Ship Pukaki, Pingelap

Description:
Late Ms. Pastora Semens (b. 1927, 87 years old) sings part of the song of ship Piokake. This ship is the 1345-ton steam ship Pukaki which was built in 1887. It often visited Micronesia to recruit phosphate workers in Nauru during the early Japanese administration period. Due to a tail shaft's problem, the ship drifted from Kosrae to Rabaul, New Guinea, for 42 days during such a trip in 1916. The full version of this song was recorded from a Mwoakillese elder: Piuhkake mweselisang uhdan sapwe...
