- Pukekohe Chinese market gardener Jackie Young in the cabbage fields, March 1993. ("Pukekohe market gardeners report no problems in finding local workers after an Immigration Service swoop late last year removed more than 70 overstayers from the fields. But grower Jackie Young believes they could soon face problems finding local labour. Mr Young, who has hired men from Tuvalu Island, says local people tend to last just a few days in the harsh conditions and low wages. 'These people (from the islands) can go without much,' Mr Young says. 'They are used to living off the smell of an oily rag.' Pukekohe Growers' Association president Stan Clark says he knows of no problems finding local workers.
