William Reynolds enlisted in the United States Army in 1908 and was assigned the 11th Cavalry. Deployed to Cuba as a peacekeeper following the Spanish-American War, Reynolds would remain in Cuba until 1911 when he would be transferred to the 5th Cavalry and sent to Hawaii.
