(TODD HEISLER/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)

Description:
While stationed in Hawaii, Jim Cathey and his Marine buddies took a trip to Iwo Jima, where they camped on the beach and remembered the nearly 6,000 Marines who died there during World War II. They each took home a sackful of sand from the beach. At Cathey's funeral, his friends drizzled fistfuls of it over his casket.
