Feast in honor of Macuina’s daughter, [1789-1794]

Description:
Summary: The party is represented in honor of the daughter of Macuina, head of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nutka), indigenous community of the northwest Pacific coast in Canada. The celebration takes place on the beach, at the foot of the mountains, near the house of Macuina. On a grandstand, built in richly adorned wood and raised to high ground, appears Macuina, her daughter and another character, possibly Quatlazape, in charge of throwing a cylindrical object on a kind of platform. In it were numerous naked young people who struggled to take the thrown object. Contemplating the spectacle and close to the platform, there appear Indians of both sexes and some Spanish officers who are attended by the Indian chiefs. Drawing made during the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina lead the expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. It is attributed to the Italian artist Fernando Brambila, who made numerous views of Guam, Philippines, Macau, Vavao, Peru, Chile and Argentina.
