The corvettes in the islands of Vavao, [1789-1792]
- Description:
- Summary: View of a beach in the islands of Vavao, where several scenes are depicted. While a group of Spanish soldiers carry in their boats a series of vats with water and make some change with the natives, a spectacle takes place on the beach, perhaps a sacrifice, in honor of the visitors. Presiding over the act is the head of the tribe and three Spanish officers, one of whom seems to be Alejandro Malaspina. From inside the village, in procession, a large group of men approaches the party. The sight is taken from the water, where a raft appears with Indians contemplating the event. Drawing made during the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina lead the expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. It is attributed to the Italian artist Fernando Brambila, who made numerous views of Guam, Philippines, Macau, Vavao, Peru, Chile and Argentina.
