["Puerto de Acapulco, [1789-1794]"]
- Description:
- Summary: View of the population and port of Acapulco from the Frontón del Grifo. First, a group of fishermen and several vessels. On the left the corvettes Discovered and Atrevida, and in the background the hospital of the Hippolytus Fathers next to a farmhouse and behind a mountain range. On the right and on a mound, the Fort of San Carlos. Acapulco stands out for having been the starting point and arrival of the Galleon of Manila since 1565. Its importance as one of the first ports of the world for two and a half centuries, decreased in the middle of the eighteenth century by the pragmatics of Free Trade given by Charles III. The corvettes called Descubre and Atrevida were the vessels that formed part of the Malaspina expedition, which took place between 1789 and 1794. Commander Alejandro Malaspina, under the command of the Discover, lead this expedition organized by the Spanish crown to tour his American possessions, according to a plan presented by the sailor himself. The material gathered is scattered in different institutions of Spain, England, Argentina and Chile. This view is attributed to the Italian artist Fernando Brambila, who made numerous views of Guam, Philippines, Macao, Vavao, Peru, Chile and Argentina.
