Description:
In many parts of New Guinea and the neighbouring islands, a unique structure dominates the hamlets and villages: ceremonial houses are central to the ritual lives of these communities, and in the Sepik River region in particular, they are often very large. Known generically as "the men's house", their primary goal is to maintain male authority and social order. While there are several local variants, they are characterised by an architectural design that includes artwork and elaborate ornamentation of both the structural components and the paintings that often adorn them. The interior, the sole domain of men,is where the most precious items are kept: ritual, magical, artistic and powerful objects. It is also the centre of men's social life, where ceremonies to activate the spirit forces, as well as social and political events are held.
