kranium, cranium

Description:
Cranium with mandible of Young adult/Mature adult Male. No obvious decorations present that is distinguishable from taphonomic modifications. Skull is relatively uniform tannish-yellow, but mottled slightly darker or lighter in places (but not bleached), with orange-ish staining on right maxilla and zygo and darker red-purple on the left occipital and mastoid (manganese staining?). Very little soil and few roots. Mandible and max glued together. Mandibular posterior border lightly polished. Left zygo broken off postmortem and glued back on off-centre. No obvious trauma, but two very small areas of bone growth (one right parietal one left frontal), not necessarily osteomas. Pathology might include very faint small areas of cribra (pitted, score 1) and an area of light evenly distributed pitting and possible woven bone on the posterior parietals and occipital. Teeth are almost entirely in situ but moderately to severly worn, especially anteriorly (pulp chambers exposed). No visible caries, score 1 calc and/or soil and black staining on most teeth, minor periodontal pitting observed on most of both alveolii. Left zygo loose but glued back on off-centre. Mandible glued to maxilla, also off-centre. Maxilla: Mandible glued to maxilla preventing clear scoring of some occlusal traits. Severe occlusal wear anteriorly. Mandible: Glued together jaws plus moderate to severe wear prevents taking accurate measurements.
