["Kontinuität und Wandel in Männlichkeitskonstruktionen: ein Modell biographischer Sinnbildung mit Fallmaterial aus Papua-Neuguinea", "Continuity and change in masculinity constructions: a model of biographical sense formation with case material from Papua-New Guinea"]
- Description:
- "A general model of biographical sensation presented by the author is intended to supplement the substantive study on the formation of masculinity in Papua New Guinea (’ The strange man. Youth, masculinity, power’, Fischer, Frankfurt 1994). Biographical research faces three bottlenecks of sociological theory-building. Modernisation is often opposed as a historical process of individualizing meaning to a tradition of collective sensation; processes of individualization and autonomy are not sufficiently distinguished (normative bias versus ethnic tradition); no integration of sociological and psychoanalytic theory of gender is achieved. In contrast, the model presented with the approach of psychoanalytical-social-scientific hermeneutics does not define structured differences between cultures or modernization levels. Instead, individual and collective, autonomous and heterogeneous sensing is determined as inherent elements and conflicts in the sense formation process itself. The construction of the model and the method allow to open up the inherent struggle as well as its individual or cultural solutions in both traditional and modern contexts."(author’s abstract)
