Port Hadlock, south of Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula, was one of several important Puget Sound lumber mill towns. Lumbermen floated large rafts of logs to the mill where they were cut into lumber. Sailing ships carried the lumber to San Francisco and ports in South America, Hawaii, and Australia.
