- New Zealanders in South Pacific Command prepare for landings on enemy shores: Amphibious Training that preceded the fighting on Vella Lavella. These pictures were taken by a New Zealand war photographer in the South Pacific as soldiers of General Barrowclough's division carried out amphibious assault exercises shortly before they went into action in the Central Solomons. On September 21 combat teams from the 11th Brigade landed on Vella Lavella. Top to bottom are drivers L. Wilson (Otahuhu), D. E. Sklenars (Hamilton), W. J. Doherty (Wellington). Standing: Private D. Hodgkinson (Wellington).
