Sailors hauling bags of wreckage from the Samoan Clipper from the Avocet to the wharf

Description:
The tragedy of the Clipper: pictures relating to the search for the flying-boat at Pago Pago. Most of these pictures were taken at Pago Pago shortly after the disappearance of the Samoan Clipper was reported. The United States Navy seaplane made a flight and reported a large patch of oil on the sea 14 miles from Pago Pago, and the naval vessel Avocet later picked up small pieces of wreckage. When the Union Company's Islands steamer Matua left Apia for Auckland her course was diverted to the scene of the locality. A service was held on board and wreaths dropped into the sea.
