Gaunt, twisted wreckage recalls historic hurricane which swept Apia Harbour, Samoa, half-a-century ago
- Description:
- The Union Company vessel Maunganui at anchor near the Adler at Apia during her recent Islands cruise. The Adler, a German warship, was hurled onto the reef where the wreckage now lies during a fierce hurricane in Apia Harbour on March 15, 1889. Part of a series of photographs taken when the Maunganui (Union Steamship Company) took a three weeks' holiday cruise to the Society Islands, Samoa and Tonga, with around 250 tourists aboard. The vessel left from Auckland on July 7 and arrived back in Auckland on 29 July.
