Interesting collection of ships' figureheads at New Zealand's naval base
- Description:
- A permanent home for relics of the sailing days. Commander Nelson Clover, of H.M.S. Philomel, has an interesting hobby in the procuring of the figureheads of old sailing ships for mounting in the reserve at the Devonport Naval Base, Auckland. That his collection is rapidly growing is shown by this general view of the reserve. H.M.S. Philomel can be seen in the background. Inset is a photograph of a carpenter cleaning one of the latest additions, the figurehead of the four-masted barque Rewa. On the right of the picture is another historic souvenir of the sea. It is the anchor of the German sloop Adler, wrecked at Apia, Samoa, 1889.
