"Return of the Giant Clam " : The South Pacific Aqauculture Development Project
- Description:
- The giant clam in Tonga is facing extinction at an alarming rate due to overfishing by the community who are largely unaware of the consequences. In an attempt to promote greater public awareness and respect for this marine animal, the Ministry of Fisheries in this video illustrates how community effort, cooperation, and awareness can help rejuvenate the growth of the giant clam within Tonga. Activities such as schools and community workshops are carried out as well as the appointment of personnel to oversee the development of giant clam sanctuaries within several communities.
