The main cause of marine plastic litter is thought to be the release of waste in coastal areas or into the ocean, due to improper solid waste management (SWM) on land Major concerns include the degradation of the marine environment and its ecosystem, impaired ship navigation the impact of tourism and fisheries and a degraded coastal living environment.
