A gift from Bruce
By Guy | Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington | 11 Aug 2025
I've got a big, brown seed that sits on my desk, the same as features in this necklace (I wish I could remember what species it is). They were given as symbols of royalty and status, so whether I deserve it is definitely up for debate.
I treasure it though, as it was a gift from Bruce Goldsworthy, our tour guide up and over Rarotonga. I've been on Bruce's tour up Te Rua Manga twice now with my father and my brother. He's an incredible guide to the ecology and history of the island, and walking with him are some of my best memories of my times on Rarotonga.
I'm sure there's hundreds of tourists all over the world with these seeds, but I still appreciate the one given to me.
