Solidarity

By Holly | Aotearoa | 27 Mar 2024

Prior to seeing this image, I had not considered how the civil rights movement connected with Hawaii and its indigenous people. It feels natural for the civil rights movement to stand in solidarity with the Hawaiian people as there is a similar (yet distinctly unique) struggle between these two marginalised groups. This image interests me in reading further into how Dr. Martin Luther King recognised and supported the struggles of Hawaii as an occupied land.
