The purpose of this thesis has been to assess and outline the diverse roles and contributions of 'foreign' (that is non-indigenous) Pacific Islanders. in the region of north-eastern Australia. (consisting the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York, and Torres Strait), and eastern New Guinea during the years 1863 to 1878. Chapter one examines Pacific Islanders and the process of colonization.
