Academics and detention centre staff call for end to mandatory detention

Description:
More than 100 former workers at the Nauru and Manus Island detention centres have signed a letter saying Labor's call for a Senate inquiry into allegations of abuse of detainees doesn't go far enough. The doctors, psychologists, teachers and other staff have repeated their call for the centres to be closed and for all asylum seekers to be brought to Australia. Meanwhile almost 2,000 academics have signed a separate letter to the Prime Minister, asking for an end to mandatory detention.
