Ere Marsters, oral history, 2016

Description:
Ere Marsters talks about her English great-grandfather, William Marsters, who settled on Palmerston Island, the Cook Islands, and recounts stories from her childhood there. She mentions training as a tailor in Rarotonga and emigrating to New Zealand in the 1950s to join her sister in Hamilton. She talks about working hard in various clothing businesses in Auckland, saving enough to buy a house in Newmarket, Auckland, and eventually running her own business at home. She also discusses how young family members from The Cook Islands lived with her in order to attend good local schools. She talks about Church involvement, experiencing racial discrimination by some Church members, visiting women in prison, teaching them crafts, and her enjoyment of singing.

My Cousin

By Carol Raea nee Marsters | Raumati Beach | 16 Jun 2021

This is my first cousin Ere Marsters. Her father and my father were brothers. Her dad is Ned Marsters the younger brother of my father Carl Marsters.

It was good to listen to what she did in her younger days, being the youngest cousin i was too young to know what they did back then.
i know our Uncle Tearaia was also a tailor maybe she learnt from him before she came to New Zealand.

She has just celebrated her 90th Birthday in Auckland. Happy Birthday Ere, From Caroline Akakaingaro Marsters Raea
