Madang Slipways
By Henry Kigolena | Madang, Madang Province | 20 Sep 2025
I was born in 1959, at the Madang General Hospital. Both of my parents were from Milne Bay Province (eastern tip of Papua New Guinea) and travelled to Madang in the mid 1950's. My old man was a welder by profession and later became a boat builder. He was one of the early persons who helped build up the Madang Slipways, that provided minor maintenance to all vessels operating within the New Guinea Islands/mainland regions including the earlier PNG Navy vessels HMAS Ladava, Aitape etc. The Managing Director that time was an Australian first name Slim who was initially from Sydney.
