First U.S. Plane Rises From Saipan Air Field

Marines of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (22nd MEU) are led aboard the amphibious assault ship USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) during Operation Sharp Edge. The Marines will be flown to the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia, to augment security and evacuate U.S. and foreign nationals from the fighting between government and rebel forces
